This is Gooch's personal account of the events surrounding the first rebel tour to South Africa, of which he was a member. He explains the background in some detail and firmly defends his decision to sign up for it. He offers several arguments concerning the way in which he felt the team were unfairly singled out and also why he felt touring could benefit multi racial cricket. Though he expresses concern about the team being presented as an unofficial England XI, he acknowledges that this was inevitable. It's therefore a pity that he doesn't engage with the argument against the tour in terms of its symbolic significance rather than just a collection of individual choices.
The tour itself is briefly covered, with much focus on the three year ban on players imposed by the TCCB. Thereafter, the book is mainly about his domestic cricket with Essex during his international ban and is mainly interesting in terms of how much it shows cricket has changed since the 1980s. This is especially evident with regard to competitive scores in one day cricket, over rates and the way the England team is selected.
