The Secret Garden (Collins Classics) is the story of a young girl Mary Lennox and her troubles with her temper. Mary is born to a wealthy and selfish parents in India who don't seem to want her. The treatment meted out to Mary makes her rude and uncouth. A widespread cholera in India kills her parents and all the servants in their house and leaves Mary all alone. She is sent to live with her uncle in Yorkshire at his home Misselthwaite Manor.

There, Mary meets Martha, a servant there who keeps Mary engaged with her stories. One of those stories inspires her and mellows her down. The story talks about the late mistress of the house who has buried a key to a secret garden in the manor. Mary soon finds her appetite increasing as she keeps herself amused in the manor. A robin draws her attention to some dug up earth and to her surprise she finds the key to the secret garden there. That same night she is disturbed a strange crying. She follows the noise and finds a young boy, Colin, who is her age, living in a secret bedroom. She discovers that he hasn't seen fresh air in years and decides that he has to be brought out. So Colin is put in his wheelchair and brought out into the garden. Colin spends everyday in the garden and becomes healthier. His father, on returning from his trip, is astonished to find him playing in the garden with Mary.
